Dedicated to Singaporeans and a travel guide to London

Go on a shopping spree along Oxford Street? See the world most famous monarch in Buckingham Palace? Watch your favourite EPL football team play in a match? Many Singaporeans have all grown up reading and hearing so much about London through TV, film and books that we hope one day we can see the city with our own eyes.

London makes an ideal first stop for a Europe holiday to countries like France, Italy and Switzerland. A visit to London need not be expensive, provided you know where to look. There is plenty to do and so much of it completely free! We hope to inspire you to travel and discover what London has to offer.

We hope this travel guide proves a valuable resource for Singapore travelers who prefer to travel to London independently and find packaged tour as too restrictive. Whether you are more interested in ‘ticking off’ must-see British world heritages or have the the desire to get below the surface, we hope to be your local guide to help you get the most out of the capital for less. Navsky is accumulating testimonials from fellow Singaporeans which chronicles our work in London so that we can provide  with more updated, relevant and useful travel information. If you like to contribute some articles or ideas to this website, feel free to email us.

    Facts and figures

London is the capital of Britain and the links with Singapore through history and tradition make it one of the top European destination.
    • Total land area: 1,584 sq km (More than twice the size of Singapore: 707sq km)
    • Population: 7.8m (Singapore: 4.8m)
London is proud of its River Thames where it flows through the heart old financial district lies (Square mile) and continues east to the  new financial district in Canary Wharf.

The water authorities had transformed the once stinking  and filthy river back to river full of life with fishes. Tap water is safe and drinkable in London but it  taste slightly different from the chlorine treated water in SIngapore. London tap water is referred as "hard water" because soft rocks like lime or chalk are present so do not be alarmed and think the water is "dirty" if you find small white particles floating in your glass of tap water.

    Weather and timezone

Unlike Singapore's all year round summer weather which is often hot and sticky, London has plenty of dry but cloudy weather throughout the year. The weather  is just as much a topic of daily conversation because it is so unpredictable. Be prepared for any type of weather, even in summer and always bring an umbrella.

London temperate climate, especially in Autumn and Spring makes it ideal for most Singaporeans generally likes to be in air-con. Even summer does not feel that hot because of the dryness of the air.

Temperatures are good for walking and relaxed sightseeing in the Spring (Mar - May), Summer (Jun - Aug) and Autumn (Sept - Nov).  Winter (Dec, Jan, Feb) weather is considered mild, with average maximum temperatures around 8ºC, but cold winds can often make it feel chilling.

More often than not, London skies are overcast and the rain is incessant therefore it's always joyful to see on a rare beautiful sunny English day.

For budget seekers, the cheapest time to come to London could be during the winter when there are many hotels and airlines offering special deals during this low season and many shops slashing prices in the post Christmas sale. However, the average sunshine hours are low (shorter days) in the winter which also means that most attractions close early during the winter. If you are brave enough to come in the cold, sometimes rainy winter, you could be helping yourself save quite a bit of money.

What to wear? There are 4 seasons in London.
    • Summer - you can wear what you normally wear in Singapore but I dont think it's a good idea to wear the flip flops or slippers. Pavements in London is not as clean and flat as in Singapore. It is safer to wear covered shoes in London. Bring a good pair of sunglasses.
    • Spring and Autumn, you can wear a sweater over a T-shirt and a goodjacket.
    • Winter, please buy a good coat, scarf, winter boots possibly gloves and a hoodie.

London is on Greenwich meantime (GMT). Singapore is 8 or 7 hours ahead depending on daylight savings from April to October (7 hours).

    Current weather and time

    Pounds/Euros vs Singapore dollars

Most Singaporeans prefer a combined Europe holiday rather than a London only trip to get a good sampling of European countries. We believe many of us like we do will certainly not want to travel so far just for one destination.

Because of the exchange rates, a Europe holiday is often perceived to be high cost and expensive. However, if you look hard enough, you should be able to find some good deals that will offer good value for money.

Britain's currency is the pound (Sterling £). The recent weakness of the pound and reduced VAT (2.5% cut) have certainly made London a more affordable destination now.  Now is the time to travel for a fraction of the price.

The leading banks in the UK includes HSBC Bank, Barclays Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds TSB banks. Avoid changing your Singapore dollars in UK because Singapore dollars are not widely accepted in the UK.
